The days of sleeping through plane ride to your next vacation spot are over once you have kids. You are a parent now, and flying as a family is a whole new playing field. Whether you are flying with your 2-year old who recently found their love for singing at the top of their lungs, or your newborn who can't leave your arms for even just a minute, we're here to offer our tips on how to tackle the most common challenges when flying with kiddos. First and foremost, it's important to accept the fact that you can't control everything. Thus, be prepared to be surprised. (This includes other people's reactions). All you can do is plan ahead for what is to be expected. There's a long checklist of things needed for your family when traveling, and having help could make things easier (or more difficult). If you divide and conquer tasks with your partner (and little ones, if possible), each member of the family can be in charge of their own tasks in order to avoid over-packing or under-packing. For example, assign one person to be on snack duty, so there isn't an overflow of treats that might become a hassle to carry around. Another family member can be in charge of passports and other important documents and necessities so nothing vital gets left behind. Speaking of important documents, fly with copies of your children's birth certificates. Usually younger children aren't required to show ID's, but with traveling policies becoming more strict over time, you should plan to over prepare papers to avoid potential issues with security. Dealing with a sick child on vacation could be your worst nightmare. Some parents try to avoid this by getting their child vaccinated right before their flight. This quick pediatrician visit could lead to rashes, fevers, or other minor side effects that become major inconveniences when trapped on a plane. If you must see a pediatrician or doctor before traveling, try to schedule your appointment at least one week before your flight to avoid potential health issues. Choose the long layover. I know you're asking, why would anyone CHOOSE to stay in an airport any longer then they have to? Simply do it for the kids. This gives them an opportunity to burn some energy, get a real meal in them, and relax before boarding onto another crammed plane ride. This also relieves (some) stress from parents by allowing the whole family to take a laxed approach of making it to the next flight on time. To make matters easier on everyone, try and be more relaxed about the normal rules. Do you struggle getting your child to change out of their jammies everyday? Well on travel day, let them. It's important to accommodate to whatever makes them feel most comfortable. Are they normally only allowed to have 1 piece of candy a day? Let them have an additional piece (if their behavior was positive). Flying can be tough for anyone, so try and make it easier for everyone.
